There are people in our game who pass through, and then there are those who quietly shape it, year after year. Michele Wallace sits firmly in the second group — not for recognition, but for the love of the game and the people in it.

Since 1969, Michele has given her time, energy and heart to netball without missing a single year. That kind of consistency is rare. It speaks to something deeper than commitment — it reflects genuine passion and a lifelong connection to the sport and her community.

Her journey began as a player at Birkenhead Primary, Birkdale Intermediate & Northcote College before moving to Westlake Netball Club, a place she didn’t just play for, but helped build and continues to lead today. Along the way, she shared the court with and against some of the greats of the game, experiences that shaped her understanding and respect for netball at every level.

Coaching came early. At just 17, she stepped into the role — as many did in those days — but what started as expectation quickly became purpose. That purpose has carried through decades, evolving into her work as a coach developer and mentor within Netball North Harbour. Michele is known by many — hundreds of coaches, thousands of players — and now finds herself coaching the children of those she once guided. That kind of legacy can’t be manufactured; it’s earned through time, care and consistency.

What stands out most is how Michele approaches people. She meets them where they are, recognising the strengths they already bring — whether that’s as a parent, a teammate or a first-time coach — and helps them see how those skills translate into the game. She creates spaces where people feel they belong, where connection matters, and where confidence can grow.

Her philosophy is simple but powerful. Sport is more than results. It’s a vehicle to build resilience, to learn how to win and lose with grace, and to help young people become well-rounded adults. That belief sits at the heart of everything she does.

Michele speaks with humility about her own journey. She values the relationships she’s built — including mentors who have become friends — and remains just as open to learning today as she was when she started. She still gets butterflies. She still feels the excitement. And she still shows up with the same energy and enthusiasm, because she genuinely loves what she does.

Her advice to others reflects that grounded approach: trust your instincts, be authentic, keep it real, and never hesitate to ask for support. It’s guidance that has helped shape generations of coaches.

Michele never seems to tire — that’s because when you care this deeply, it doesn’t feel like work. It feels like purpose.

In a game that continues to evolve, Michele Wallace remains a constant — someone who has given so much, asked for so little, and continues to make those around her better. Not loudly, not for attention, but in the steady, meaningful way that defines people who leave a lasting mark.

And that’s what makes her so special to our netball community.
