Earlier this year, Centres across the Northern Zone welcomed the return of the netball season with a series of vibrant Netball is Back Give it a Go (GIAG) Days, designed to introduce young players to the sport and energise returning FutureFERNS.

Held throughout late February and March, the GIAG events were aimed at young people in Years 1–8, offering a fun, friendly environment for both newcomers and returning players. Activities included skill sessions, mini games, and warm-ups led by NetballSmart-trained Northern Mystics and Northern Stars players, much to the delight of young fans.

Centres reported strong turnout and positive engagement from local schools, parents, and community groups. Many made the most of the opportunity to connect with new families, promote winter season registrations, and showcase the joy and accessibility of netball.

To support these efforts, Netball New Zealand provided marketing materials, and Netball Northern supported with planning assistance, and a small financial contribution to Centres running events within the scheduled weekends.

Success stories shared by Centres highlighted the importance of clear promotion, school partnerships, and engaging on-the-day activities like “bring a friend” challenges, Future Ferns games and parent involvement.

As the 2025 season continues, the early buzz from Netball is Back has laid a strong foundation for community growth and player development. To learn more about the FutureFERNS programme head to www.futureferns.co.nz.
